Middlesex Sheriff’s Office to recognize graduates of 41st Basic Training Academy

Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian will welcome new Corrections Officers during a ceremony marking the graduation of the MSO’s 41st Basic Training Academy (BTA) on Friday, December 8, at Lowell Memorial Auditorium. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m.
 
In order to graduate, recruits were required to complete 12 weeks of classroom, physical and on the job training at both the MSO Training Academy and the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction.
 
Lowell Police Superintendent William Taylor will provide the keynote address.
 

Video: Planning Board Receives Update on Downtown Corridor Project

At the Planning Board Meeting on Monday November 27th, the Board received an update on the downtown corridor project proposal. John Bechard of VHB gave the update on the Corridor project which is meant to ease traffic downtown while making it more safe for drivers, pedestrians and bikers. A good amount of discussion was about the proposed bike lanes that will be implemented downtown. View highlights of the discussion and full meeting below.

At this past weeks planning board meeting in addition to a public hering regarding whisper ridge and 143 spring street, they also continued the public hearing about 147 lumber street. The site developers presented changes to the proposed plan that were made since last meeting.

Senate Votes to Expand Contraceptive Mandate

BOSTON – Today, the Massachusetts Senate voted to enact H.4009, An Act advancing contraceptive coverage and economic security in our state, better known as the ACCESS Bill. In October, the bill was restructured with a compromise between legislators, the Coalition for Choice, and a group of Massachusetts insurance carriers – who now vocally support the legislation.

Public Notice: Possible Water Discoloration due to Hydrant re-location

Please be advised that due to a fire hydrant re-location by the contractors installing drainage and sidewalks on East Main St., you may notice some discoloration due to the operation of shutoff valves. The work should be done by early afternoon. If you do experience any discoloration, let your cold water faucet run later this afternoon to help clear your lines.

Sheriff Koutoujian, Chief Ryan to participate in forum on opioid crisis

Event to be hosted by The Rappaport Center for Law and Public Policy

NEWTON, Mass. – Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian and Arlington Police Chief Fred Ryan will participate in a pair of panel discussions on the opioid crisis on Wednesday, November 15.

Sheriff Koutoujian and Chief Ryan will join healthcare and fellow public safety officials to discuss “Creative Solutions to the Opioid Crisis” at a forum hosted by Boston College Law School’s Rappaport Center for Law and Public Policy.

Senate Passes Sweeping Healthcare Reform and Cost Containment Bill

BOSTON- Last night the Massachusetts Senate passed sweeping healthcare reform legislation S.2022, An Act Furthering Health Empowerment and Affordability by Leveraging Transformative Health Care. The HEALTH act, passed by a vote of 33-6, focuses on both short and long terms goals on how to fix our healthcare system to lower costs, improve outcomes, and maintain access.
