Hello – and welcome to the HCAM News monthly medical segment “To Your Health.” I’m Dr. Jim Kenealy.

Fall is here and our children are flocking back to school. Their active, young brains need constant refueling. A healthy lunch and nutritious snacks are critical to your child’s academic success.

The FDA recommends that you keep three things in mind when preparing lunches and snacks for young scholars:

  • First, control portion size. Some “one package” items actually may contain more than one serving per package — it’s important to read labels and nutrition blocks.

That blunt description comes from Esther Dechant, M.D., medical director of the Klarman Eating Disorders Center at McLean Hospital in Belmont. Scary stuff.
