Baypath Humane Society Pivots to Adjust to New Normal Animal Shelter’s Response to COVID-19

In response to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, Baypath Humane
Society of Hopkinton, Inc., announced it would temporarily close the shelter to the public this past

March. This was an unprecedented time as Baypath’s leadership, staff and volunteers pivoted from day-
to-day operations to managing the increasingly fluid situation in line with the shelter’s mission.

Ahead of the shutdown, Baypath was able to send a call out to fosters to help get animals out of the
shelter and continued to do so after the shutdown as well. The organization also established and
implemented a new protocol for fosters and adoptions. Some of the new procedures include:
• Contactless foster pick-ups and drop-offs
• Virtual matchmaking for cats with foster-to-adopt options
• A protocol created for initial dog matchmaking with meetings held onsite but outside

While navigating this new normal, Baypath’s top priority was to ensure the safety of the animals and
staff as well as to use the time wisely to make much-needed improvements and thoroughly clean the
facility. The non-profit implemented organization-wide revised and newly created protocols and
practices. Some of the facility updates include newly painted doors, floors and walls. Staff also organized
and consolidated supplies to create more space for animals and people.

During this extreme time of need, Baypath knew it was vital to continue to serve the community. The
shelter reached out to local animal control officers, continued to take in owner surrenders and
maintained the “front office” by fielding calls and emails from the community in need of various
resources. Baypath also continued to work with a local food pantry, Project Just Because, to provide
supplies.

As the situation evolved, Baypath made the difficult decision to cancel their annual Fur Ball, typically
held at the end of March. Though refunds were offered to ticket holders, many people graciously
donated their ticket cost to the shelter. The Fur Ball auction has been moved to an online format that
allows individuals to browse and bid on items and all proceeds benefit Baypath. Out of an abundance of
caution, a decision was also made to cancel Baypath’s annual Fore Paws Golf Tournament (held in June)
and to change their annual Paws and Claws 5K Run/Walk into a virtual format (to be held in October).
Throughout the past few months, the flexibility of staff and volunteers has made this transition smooth.

Staff took on additional roles, adapted to new protocols and accommodated new scheduling needs.
Volunteers, no longer able to be onsite, found new ways to support Baypath through efforts that
included:
• Organizing a Baypath merchandise fundraiser
• Building a bench for our lobby
• Creating a multimedia shelter enrichment video
• Transporting local animals in need from area rescues and ACOs

“Throughout this journey, our mission has been at the forefront and has not wavered. Although this is
our new normal, our goals as an organization to support animal welfare have not changed.” Said
Elizabeth Jefferis, Baypath Executive Director.

Moving forward into the next stage, Baypath continues to serve the local community with animal
intake, care and adoptions while implementing new safety guidelines. Baypath has resumed out-of-state
transports with their Southern rescue partners as well as spay and neuter services. The organization is
also slowly recommencing volunteer activity, beginning with outdoor-only shifts. Additionally, the
shelter recently began taking in supply donations again.
