Hopkinton athletes take top spots in Boys & Girls races in Week 4

Hopkinton claimed both top spots for the boys and girls races at the Central Massachusetts Conference Ski League Slalom competition on Thursday February 6, 2020 at Ski Ward in Shrewsbury.

For the boys, Senior Captain Max Rodgers placed first with the fastest combined time of two runs. Max’s twin brother Jack placed second, while Junior Jackson Schlussel placed seventh, and Junior Cameron Hanna placed 22nd. The boys team claimed second place behind the formidable St. Johns High School team.

On the girls side, Junior Captain Cate Barry also finished in first place. Freshman Elizabeth Herlihy placed 16th, and Sophomores Tori Fischer and Avery Hutchinson placed 31st and 34th respectively. The girls' team took 5th place overall.

In just its fourth year, the Hopkinton High School Alpine Ski Team has grown its roster to 25 athletes, consisting of 17 boys and 8 girls. The team trains and races at Ski Ward in Shrewsbury. The team competes in the Central Massachusetts Conference Ski League (CMCSL), which consists of 11 high school teams and boasts over 250 racers.

Head Coach Nancy Schlussel said of her team’s increasingly strong performance, “I could not be more proud of all of these athletes. They work hard, and support and encourage each other every week at practice and in competition. Every racer contributes to this team.”

The team will compete in CMCSL’s final race of the season on Thursday, February 12th. After the final race, CMCSL will announce its selection of racers that will compete in the 2020 MIAA Alpine Ski State Championship on March 4th at Berkshire East in Charlemont, Mass. At the state championship, racers have the opportunity to compete against the top high school racers from across the state. Go Hillers!
