The Town of Hopkinton seeks a Principal Planner
Under the direction of the Director of Land Use & Town Operations, the Principal Planner is a municipal
position within urban planning. The role performs highly technical, professional and administrative work
for the Town's Land Use Department. Work involves preparing planning studies, assessing proposals for
land use and development; determining compliance with Zoning Bylaws, and applicable state and federal
laws; planning long range projects; acquiring and administering grants; and recommending policies,
standards or criteria. The Principal Planner functions independently and requires the exercise of
considerable initiative and judgment and the interpretation and application of laws, regulations, and
procedures. This position also has frequent contact with the general public, town departments, attorneys
and developers.
Qualifications
 Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or similar, Master’s Degree preferred. One (1) to three (3)
years of experience as a municipal or environmental planner; or any equivalent combination of
education and experience.
 Knowledge of Public administration and municipal government operations; applicable local, state
and federal laws codes, rules and regulations; litigation, legal document management, public
property disposition and strategic planning.
 Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences including public
officials and the general public; maintain knowledge and skill in utilizing software programs;
recognize Town priorities and work cooperatively and collaboratively to support their
accomplishment.
 Skilled in organizational, writing, interpersonal/collaborative communication, resourcefulness and
discretion; computer skills that encompass effective use of word processing, spreadsheet,
presentation, email, internet browser and Munis software.
Salary Range
$70,000 - $90,000 Annually depending on qualifications.
