Hopkinton's Tip Line 508-293-1191

By Michelle Murdock, Freelance Writer

Have you witnessed underage drinking or drug use and wondered what you could do abou it? The Hopkinton Public Schools and School Resource Officer Phil Powers has set up a confidential tip line 508-293-1191 that can be used by parents and students to report these activities. The Tip LIne is manned 24 hours a day and all calls go directly to Officer Powers.

"I am committeed to doing that," said Powers.

If not answered right away, the calls go to an answering machine and Powers receives an alert on his cell phone. The response depends on the message. If credible, the call might result in a cruiser being sent out to check things out.

The goal, according to Powers, is to keep kids safe. While Powers says that some kids will come and talk to him if they are concerned or want to help a friend, the Tip LIne is good for kids that aren't comfortable talkiing face to face.

The Tip Line has been up and operational since the end of December and is beginning to see some activity.

"We wanted to have it in place before the Christmas break," said Powers. "We had some prank calls in the beginning, but hopefully that's out of their systems."

Powers admits that some see the Tip Line as a way to tattle, but the goal is to educate students about the dangers of underage drinking and drug use. He is thinking about changing the name to The Help Line to reinforce this.

"You have to do what you have to do to keep these kids safe," says Powers.

The Tip Line does not replace 911 and should not be used for emergencies. For more information or questions about the Tip Line, contact Officer Phil Powers at 508-497-9820, x1004, or ppowers@hopkinton.k12.ma.us.
