Artist and curator Jamaal Eversley was honored to receive grants in 2022 from Hopkinton, Ashland, Hopedale and Milford local cultural councils to work with teens to create artwork that represents them and their neighborhood.
High school students from these towns were asked to create pieces that focus on the theme: “The things that make me BOLDLY different, makes me BEAUTIFUL!” These artworks focus on their distinctive, recognizable personality traits. Questions they considered when creating the pieces were: What makes you proud to be you? What makes you feel blessed?
Eversley has dedicated a portion of his art sales to an award fund to be awarded to four of the teens participating in the exhibition. The HCA has also pledged to award a 5th Bold & Beautiful Award to the boldest teen in the show as determined by judge Natiana Alexandra Fonseca, a Bold & Beautiful artist alum.
The students who win The Bold & Beautiful Award will be able to passionately explain in a short essay why they feel blessed, what their piece of art means for them, how it describes who and why they are "Bold & Beautiful". This art show speaks to the point that our youth has something important to say and that we are listening and believe in them.
The free public reception will take place on Friday September 9th from 6-7 pm. All are welcome to attend to meet the student artists.
Curator and artist Jamaal Eversley, born in 1988, hails from Randolph, MA. With a business degree in hand, from Babson College, he has decided to chase after his dreams and passionately pursue his talents as an eccentric abstract artist and intertwine business with the arts in order to serve the community. He has exhibited his art throughout Massachusetts and has received several public art grants to bring his colorful patterns to the community. Jamaal constantly creates to spur the juices of creative genius and put the “F” meant for “Fun” back into Fine Arts. You can see more about him and his work on social media @SirJayEvs.
Juror Natiana Alexandra Fonseca (they/them/theirs) is an artist currently living in unceded Wôpanâak land. Growing up in post-colonial New England plays a large part in their artistic practice as they deal with themes of water, land, memory, and ancestry. Through a combination of weaving, felting, and painting Natiana communicates their experiences of existing in a world that historically undervalues Black folks labor and love, as well as the significance of textiles as both craft and fine art. Over the past few years Natiana has worked with the RISD Museum in the Costume and Textiles Department as a Curatorial and Conservation Assistant as well as having received an internship with the Souls Grown Deep Foundation in 2022. Natiana is set to graduate with their BFA in Textiles from the Rhode Island School of Design in the Spring of 2023.
