Enter Stage Left’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream August 2,3,4

Pack a picnic, bring a blanket, and come enjoy a night of Shakespeare under the stars as Enter Stage Left Theater presents one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The performances will be held on August 2, 3, and 4 at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts Amphitheater, 98 Hayden Rowe Street. The performances are free and begin at 7:30 p.m.

Latest Job and Unemployment Estimates for Local Labor Markets in the Massachusetts

BOSTON – Tuesday, July 24, 2012 – The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development today reported that the June 2012 seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates were down in the Barnstable, Fall River, Nantucket and Tisbury areas; unchanged in the Pittsfield area; and up in the other seventeen areas over the month. Over the year, the rates are down in all twenty two labor areas.

Host Family Needed for Student from China

Although we have had a strong response for host families for next year's semester, we still have one more student to place. He is a senior from China who enjoys basketball and looks forward to living with a Hopkinton family so he can learn more about American culture. Our current host families have found their lives are being enriched in enormous and sometimes surprising ways.

Fruit Street Athletic Complex Closed July 27

Access to the Fruit Street Athletic Fields will be closed to the public on Friday July 27th to allow completion of the ongoing project to expand the parking lot. The fields may also be closed Tuesday July 31st if the contractor is behind schedule or if weather does not allow paving.

Senate Targets Economic Development and Job Creation

On Thursday, July 19 the Senate, in its latest effort to stimulate job growth and economic advancement in Massachusetts, passed legislation that will assist small businesses and the manufacturing industry, invest in research and development projects and strengthen and reform workforce development efforts, Senator Karen Spilka announced.

The bill also establishes a sales tax holiday for August 11 and 12, making this the seventh year for a two day sales tax exemption and the eighth year with at least one sales-tax-free day.

June Unemployment Remains at 6.0% - Massachusetts Jobs Decrease by 2,600

Boston, MA – July 19, 2012 –The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development today reported that the total unemployment rate remained at 6.0 percent. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ preliminary June 2012 estimates show that Massachusetts lost 2,600 jobs over the month following on a revised gain of 5,000 jobs in May.

Jobs which are at 3,244,500 reflect gains in June in six of the ten private sectors with the largest gain in Professional, Scientific, and Business Services.

Rollover on 495 Sends 6 to UMass Medical Center

A rollover today on Interstate 495 in Hopkinton sent multiple people to the hospital and caused delays in traffic

"Police responded to the single-car crash about a half-mile from Exit 21A in Hopkinton around 11:30 a.m. One person was trapped in the vehicle. A total of six were sent to the UMass Medical Center in Worcester with injuries that were not life threatening".

Richard J. Bowker, 84

Richard J. Bowker, 84, died Thursday, July 19, 2012 at St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham. He was the husband of Constance A. (Kelley) Bowker, to whom he was married for 59 years. Born in Milford, he was the son of the late Clifton U. and Gertrude (Ryan) Bowker.

He was a life-long resident of Hopkinton and a self-employed carpenter. He was also the former assistant building inspector for the town of Westborough and retired as the building inspector for the town of Hopkinton. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star.
