Candidate Statement: Ashley Fogg for School Committee

By contributor,
Ashley Fogg

My name is Ashley Fogg and I am running for election to the Hopkinton School Committee for the 2-year term vacancy. After hearing of the new vacancies in the school committee being added to the ballot come May 2022, I felt called to serve and put my name in for consideration for one of these open positions. As many of you know, Hopkinton Public Schools has almost 4,000 students and over 400 staff members and through their hard work and dedication to our district, Hopkinton is consistently ranked #1 in the school districts of Massachusetts.1 I would consider it to be an incredible privilege, honor and responsibility to serve as a School Committee member for the Hopkinton Public Schools.

A little bit about me: I grew up in Hopkinton and attended Hopkinton Public Schools. I participated in activities during my years at HPS2 including many sports and clubs. I have a B.S. in Applied Legal Studies from Suffolk University in Boston where I graduated Magna Cum Laude and received accolades for the top position in my graduating class. Before making the decision to stay home with my children, I worked as a paralegal in law firms in downtown Boston and Woburn. Knowing Hopkinton would be a wonderful place to raise our family, my husband and I moved back to Hopkinton in 2018. We have three children, two of whom currently attend Elmwood and Marathon schools, and a 4-year old who will attend in the fall of 2023. I am very active in the schools and have a personal relationship with many of the staff members, teachers and principals. I am often the room parent for my children’s classrooms and thoroughly enjoy serving and helping teachers throughout the school year. Currently, I am part of the HPTO Appreciation Committee and work with another parent to organize all the appreciation events for the teachers and staff at Marathon Elementary. My first-hand experience of having children in HPS gives me real insight into the issues, concerns and priorities many parents and community members may have regarding our schools. I hope to take this real-time experience and use it in making informed decisions as it affects the Hopkinton Public Schools and our children.

The pandemic has been difficult for our community and school district. I hope to provide a new and fresh perspective on maintaining the excellence of HPS. The past two years have been exceedingly divisive for our town, community and nation and I hope to move forward in unity, and with teamwork and compassion for my fellow committee members and community members. While differing points of view are important in making well-rounded decisions and advancements, division is not, and if elected I promise to promote unity, kindness and transparency in my decision-making.

My top priorities as I run for election:
1. The mental health crisis facing our children as we emerge from this pandemic.
2. Managing effectively the exponential growth we have seen in our student population in the last several years, while improving the school buildings and campuses to handle such an increase. 3. Continuing the excellence of Hopkinton Public Schools academics.

I hope to receive your support and vote while I promise to work endlessly to do my best to help, promote and improve the Hopkinton Public Schools. I have set up an email address for community members, parents, and students to share any concerns or questions they may have regarding my candidacy. It would be my upmost privilege and honor to serve on the Hopkinton School Committee please vote on May 16th.
