Road Closing: Clinton Street

Starting Thursday August 30,2012, Clinton Street will be closed. The street closing will effect Clinton Street only,during the hours of 8 AM to 2 PM. According to Elissa Russo of Russo Brothers, the intent is to complete the work in one day. Detour signs will be in place and detail police officers will be there to assist motorists around the site.

Brandon Joseph Showalter, 28

Brandon Joseph Showalter, 28, passed away suddenly from a heart-related illness on Saturday, Augsust 25, 2012. Born in Boston, he was the son of Ronald A. and Catherine (Cotter) Showalter of Hopkinton and East Dennis.

He was a 2002 graduate of Hopkinton High School and attended UMass Amherst. He was the vice president of operations at All Pro Cleaning Systems of Westborough. He was an avid Boston sports fan and loved watching NASCAR.

Latest Job and Unemployment Estimates in Massachusetts

On Tuesday, August 21, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported that the July 2012 seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates were down in the Barnstable, Amherst, Nantucket and Tisbury areas; unchanged in the North Adams area; and up in the other seventeen areas over the month. Over the year, the rates are down in all twenty two labor areas.

Eastern Equine Ecephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus Confirmed in Mosquitoes in Hopkinton

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) announced today that West Nile virus (WNV) has been detected in a predominantly bird biting species of mosquito called Culex. The Department also announced that Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus had been detected in a mammal biting species of mosquito called Perturbans. In 2011, 4,604 mosquito samples were tested for WNV and 275 samples were positive. Hopkinton had 0 WNV positive mosquito samples identified in 2011 but did have a positive EEE in October.

Updated Roadwork Notice

The Town of Hopkinton’s paving contractor will be working on Church PL on Tuesday August 21 from 7am-10am installing berm along the edge of the road. They will then be on the newly paved section of Hayden Rowe St (Chestnut St to College St) adjusting driveway aprons with new asphalt from 10am-3pm.

On Wednesday August 22 they will be on Church St installing berm from 7am-10am and then return to Hayden Rowe St to finish the remaining driveway aprons from 10am-3pm.

Please do not park along the side road and expect some delay during this work.

Ray Fair, An Old Soldier

Raymond J. Fair, Jr., the oldest veteran in Hopkinton, passed away on 13 July 2012. Ray was 94 years old. He served proudly in the US Army during World War II.

When the USA entered WW II, Ray was granted deferments for his work in defense operations. At 26 when finally drafted, he processed through Fort Devens before training at Camp Gruber in Oklahoma. When his unit transferred to Louisiana, Ray became a member of the newly-formed (February 1943) 985th Field Artillery Battalion. He was assigned to Battery A.

Solarize Hopkinton Reaches Tier 2 Pricing

The Hopkinton Sustainable Green Committee and the Mass Clean Energy Center are pleased to announce that the Popkes family of Cedar St. Extension signed a contract for a 7.5kW system this week, reaching tier two of the Solarize pricing schedule. That means everyone in the program just reduced their price from $3.69 to $3.62/Watt. The Popkes family, who opted for the black Suntech panel upgrade and the microinverters just saved $525.
