Center School Students Provide "Sweets for Soldiers"

By Michelle Murdock, Freelance Writer

Mrs. Christine Allen’s 1st Grade Class at Center School has initiated a project called Sweets for Soldiers, “Operation Giving Back.”

In an effort to combine a theme of kindness, as well as good health, the students will be collecting any Halloween candy that can be parted with and will be sending it overseas in a care package for soldiers. The candy will be used for fun math projects before being bundled up in class, and the box (or boxes) it will be sent in will be decorated. In addition, the first graders will also be creating cards for the troops and perhaps collecting other small items to include in the care package.

A list of other items needed by troops stationed overseas can be viewed here.

A volunteer from Helping Our Troops will be at Center School on Tuesday November 13th at 10:30 am to take the boxes to the shipping location.

"This event has been so well received in the community we are now getting donations from Highland Park neighborhood, Sunshine Preschool and Hopkinton Moms Group," said Stephanie Szewczyk, coordinator for the project.

There are 2 drop off locations for donations:
4 Singletary Way
4 Gibbon Road

In addition to candy and supplies, donations can be made to Helping Our Troops at the address below to help with the cost of shipping which ranges from $1,200 to $2,000 per month.
