Hopkinton’s legislators were pleased to welcome all 12 Hopkins 5th grade classes during 3 separate visits to the State House this week.

“One of the best parts of being a legislator is the opportunity to help foster the next generation of engaged citizens.” said Representative Dykema. “I had a wonderful time speaking with the students about the legislative process. The kids did a great job. Listening to their thoughtful and energetic comments during our mock debate was inspiring and are a credit to Hopkinton’s strong schools.”

“A visit to the State House is a terrific way to give our students the opportunity to experience our state’s history and see, with their own eyes, how our government operates,” said Senator Karen Spilka. “It was great to be able to interact with these students and introduce them to the legislative process and how they can be involved. These visits are an opportunity for us, as legislators, to promote a sense of civic consciousness and political engagement in our youngest constituents.”

During their visit the nearly 300 students and their teachers, took a tour of the State House building. Representative Dykema and Senator Spilka led the students in a mock debate and vote in the House Chamber on a pending bill before heading to the House Member’s Lounge for lunch.

“When we were debating, I felt like what we each said really meant something. I could stand up and have my voice heard on the issue and everyone paid close attention.” 5th grader Allison Bird commented. Fellow student Heather Sivo agreed, “I really liked how no one interrupted when we were speaking from the podium.”

Residents are encouraged to call Representative Dykema at 617-722-2210 and Senator Spilka at 617-722-1640 to set up their own tour of the State House for groups large and small.
