By Tom Nappi, News Director

Sergeants Joseph Bennett and John Porter of the Hopkinton Police Department were promoted to Lieutenant. The Board of Selectmen unanimously approved the promotion after Chief Edward Lee listed off the long list of accomplishments both have achieved throughout their illustrious careers. In the first video below, view the entire promotions discussion and vote, in the 2nd video, view a brief recap. The promotion followed a tribute to Lieutenant Charles Wallace who will be officially retired at the end of the year.

Joseph Bennett has worked with the Hopkinton Police Department since 1993 after serving with Southborough and Sutton. He has been a Sergeant for 16 years and currently is the core prosecutor in-charge of detectives, communications and the school resource officer. He also serves as the public information officer and has helped raise over 1 million dollars in grants for Police Department needs. Some of Lt. Bennett's many accomplishments include receiving recognition from the House of Representatives for work on the tri-country drug task force and disarming a man trying to attack with a knife and preventing any serious injury.

John Porter joined the Hopkinton Police Department in 1992 after serving in Upton. He has served as a Patrol Officer, Detective and Sergeant at the Hopkinton Police Department. Lt. Porter also served as the first school resource officer and helped build a strong relationship with the school system. Lt. Porter was also a key detective during the Neil Entwistle murder. A few of John Porter's many accomplishments consist of winning a medal of valor for disarming an armed suicidal man who lit his home on fire and attacked responding officers with a knife.
